‘Nhangu dhangany yuwalkthana bayngu bulanggitj Yolngu mitji marnggimana dhana gayangamana mayili mana dhangany wanggalangabu mana limalama ganatjirri wulumba (maramba)’.

“We continue to pass on the stories of our land and sea country for the good of the new generations”.

Crocodile Islands are the homelands of the Yan-nhaŋu people of North east Arnhem Land. For the Yan-nhaŋu the Arafura Sea is focal both as a physical space and a mental map. The tides and currents of their saltwater provide an arena for their daily activity and a bounty of marine resources and place of memories of ongoing significance in people’s lives. The Yan-nhangu language is a vehicle for and a repository of the unique local knowledge gained by generations of intimate coexistence with the sea.
